Why Bother? You may be at the place where it seems like the more you try or the closer you get in your relationship with God,, that it seems the more you are under attack or fall toward sinful attitudes and actions. This is not a new problem. Paul struggled with the very same thing.

Listen toi Paul in Romans 7:14-25, “14 So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. 15 I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.16 But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. 17 So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. 18 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.t I want to do what is right, but I can’t. 19 I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. 20 But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. 21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.”

Realize, that we are in a war against sin. Realize, that this is a rigorous battle to fight off slavery to sin and become obedient to Christ. So, when that question creeps in, “WHY BOTHER?”, buckle down, look into the counsel of God’s word and you’ll find at work in scripture, everything that is good.

Help, I’ve Been Shot in the Head

Today, many have watched as Representative Gabrielle Giffords officially submitted her resignation from her elected position. As you may recall, she was shot in the head at an event some time ago and just recently began to regain her speech and other functions as she has gradually undergone rigorous rehabilitation. A key factor about that frightful day, is that even though she was shot in the head, rescue personnel did not give up. Her own staff did not give up. Gabby herself has not given up. As bad as the damage and as scary as it has been, one thing it is not, is a story about giving up.

Maybe you have been greatly wounded in life. Maybe you have undergone unimaginable spiritual and emotional injuries. Maybe you even feel as though you have shot yourself by your life choices and the sin that follows. What you need to know today is that “Grace Reigns.” I want you to know that I am not giving up on you. I want you to know that other people I know are not giving up on you. I want to encourage you to not give up on yourself. How can we do this? Because with every breath you take, it is a reminder that God has not given up on you. Because of Jesus death on the cross, Grace Reigns.

So whether you’ve done it to yourself or your wounds come from others, you are loved, you are not given up on, you have grace waiting on you right here, right now.

Let Grace Reign!!!

Don’t look away!!!

This photo, like many others, shows a quarterback surrounded by opposition. They are all around, grabbing his jersey, probably saying things, on a mission to tackle with bad intentions.

You’ll notice another thing about this photo and the quarterback. His eyes are focussed down field at his intended receiver target.

I hope you have some kind of goals in life that God has you pursuing that bring glory to him. What you need to know, is that opposition is a part of life. Whether you’re a pastor, teacher, politician, electrician or just trying to figure out life, opposition will be at your doorstep, because this is earth and not heaven.

When you go through life struggles and come up against obstacles, it’s what you do next that makes significant impact on you as well as others.

If you’re focussed on the goal, the purpose, the mission, the target, then you’re more likely to be able to put obstacles in proper perspective. In football, opponents are part of the game. On earth, obstacles and opposition are a part of life. But if you’ll stay focussed on the target, you’ll at least be able to say, “I stayed the course.”

If you don’t have targets,,,, get some.. and then……

…..Don’t look away!!

Chain smokers welcome

Have you ever sat down in your church Sunday morning and here THEY come? That 2 pack a day chain smoker that smells so strong that you can almost feel it. Or how about the person with enough tattoos to cover the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel? Or the person with enough body piercings to supply a professional tackle box? Or the person who’s known for THAT?

Maybe you’ve had glances cast at you for one reason or another. Maybe you’ve had people discuss, make decisions about you and formulate judgements about you before even getting to know you. I’d like to apologize on behalf of REAL people for your having to experience that.

I will make you a promise. Wherever I am, you’ll not go though that. Funny thing is…..most of the anti-chainsmoker types don’t seem to be anti-chaineater at the local buffet.

God loves you so much that he gave his only son for you (John 3:16). In the midst of whatever you are, Christ died for you. Chain smoker, chain eater, drunkard, divorced, tattooed, pierced, older, younger, glutton, stinky, mean, adulterer….whoever.

You may have some things God wants to work on, but we will let Him decide, so there will always be a seat next to us at FUEL & wherever I happen to be for that matter. If your dressed to the nines or didn’t come home til nine this morning, we will save a place for you. You just might have to sit by the chain smoker,, unless he’s out back smoking.

God loves you and so do I……no matter what your hurt, habit or hang up….. You are loved.

I love being a pastor. I surrendered to God & decided to quit running in 1993 & have been in some form of ministry ever since. There is a lot of hubbub out there claiming that a majority of pastors hate their jobs. Ed Stetzer has done new research and so have I. The results…. Around here, we love the job God has given us & take to heart watching over the flock.

We do have local flocks, but since the bible says to. “shepherd the flock among you”, then I believe that this can mean those that are Christians in your community.

What an opportunity we have as pastors & Christians, to serve, work & love in the name of Christ. I believe if we will pull together, love each other more & more & keep the gospel in the front, it won’t matter who plants or waters, because God gets the glory. (1 Cor. 3)

I love my job & I pray you love yours too. If not, I would love the opportunity to pray for you.

Pain Tolerance

I have a very high tolerance for pain. I am not sure what the basis for such tolerance is, but it is just there. It could be that I was a combat medic in the army and like to treat myself. It could be all the times where medical facilities were not close and I just had to suck it up. I could be the multiple injuries inflicted upon me in the past that I had to get through. Regardless, I can tough stuff out. Having pain tolerance has it’s ups and downs. The down part of not going to the doctor much is the possibility of having greater problems that you are unaware of, or the minor problem becoming major. My doctor once made me aware of the importance by drawing attention to the frequency necessary to take care of a vehicle and that my body was more important than a car. So pain tolerance can create a bigger problem because attention is not being directed to things that could cause major issues.

All that being said, I think there are a lot of people that are suppressing pain in their soul. Whether it is relational, emotional, psychological, or spiritual, it all revolves around the thriving of the soul. The same idea of pain tolerance can lead to problems in the realm of the soul. If a person suppresses pain after pain, there will come a time where they are no longer sensitive to a major crisis of the soul. If they always deflect the pains of life and never address personally OR professionally, the things that hurt them, then when the perfect storm comes, they aren’t even aware that their life is in turmoil.

James 5 tells us that if we are suffering, then we should talk to God about it. If we are happy, we should sing to God about it. If we are struggling with sin, we should talk to God and HIS people about it. Pain tolerance CAN be good, but be careful about suppressing things so deep that you no longer feel the need to address them. The results could be tragic.
